Something I include in my services as a Destination Wedding videographer is Super 8 film! I wanted to share a little more about what it is in this blog post! Whether you want a vintage-looking highlight reel or a few clips in this beautiful format throughout your day – it’s definitely an option to consider when deciding your film package.
Super 8 film is a unique style of film that gives a quality to the video that cannot be captured digitally. It was first introduced by Kodak in 1965 and brought the ability to record video to the masses. In 1973, a magnetic strip was added to the film allowing sound to be recorded with the images. Then the format was easily accessible to those without experience with videography due to the use of cartridges and a battery-powered motor.
Why use film today?
This format was especially popular in the 1960s and 1970s and is used today for its old-school style. Because shooting on film rather than digitally allows for a completely different look and feeling. Super 8 gives a vintage and nostalgic feel to the video. I find that it’s so fun for guests to hear the old film rolling, and it gets everyone excited to see the vintage film!
Can you use film and normal 4k digital video?
Absolutely! This is the most popular way for my clients to incorporate film into their wedding video. I shoot with Super 8 film on a vintage camera from the 1970s. Super 8 is an add-on to any of my packages.
Highlight Film
You can choose to incorporate Super 8 film into your highlight film. For this option, we shoot one to two rolls of film to include in your highlight video. Carolyn and Matt chose this option for their Valley of Fire wedding. I love how it gives such a special feeling to their wedding memories!
Super 8 Stand-Alone Film
Another option is for us to create a separate film using only Super 8 footage. Clients that choose this will get two films, the normal 4k digital video and the film video. We shoot three to four rolls of film for this option. Laura and Joel chose to do this and ended up with a film teaser and a 4k full feature film. I love how this option is the best of both worlds!
